We’ve recently purchased a 2001 Tacoma 4×4 Double Cab and love it – except
for one thing. Apparently the dash rattles/vibrates against the windshield.
This is very loud and can be heard over the stereo (unless turned up too
loud for our comfort). The dealer is trying to tell me that all new Tacomas
do that and there is no fixing it. I’ve taken it in 5 times now and they’ve
been able to get rid of the rattle temporarily two of the last 3 times.
This is the 3rd new Tacoma we’ve owned in the last 5 years and we’ve never
had a rattle anywhere on the others (’97 Xtra Cab & ’99 Xtra Cab). Am I
being picky or does this sound like a legitimate gripe?
They tell me the warranty on ‘rattles’ expires @ 12K miles. From what I
understand about the lemon law (non ocrrectable defect covered by the
manufacturer’s express warranty; less than 1 year old; driven less than 12K
miles; in for service/repair 4 or more times; must substantially impair use,
market value or safety – I feel it affects the market value) we could demand
a new truck, but are we going to see the same thing with others as well?
We live in Oregon and this started before we went off-road.
Any thoughts, support or advice is much appreciated.
Thanks
Todd

Eric why are you acting so stupid? Noone asked you to come in here, did
they? And even if there were rice kernals in there a box of rice costs less
than a gallon of gas…people these days are so stupid….just because toys
last about 100% longer than usa made vehicles, doesnt mean you have to come
in here starting stuff….go ride your big-wheel or something…..

This seems to be a common complaint from ’00 model year on up…some suggest
weather stripping between the dash and windshield.

So far, the fix has been to insert foam between the dash & windshield.
Yesterday, they told me they think the foam their using has softened up and
they are ordering a stiffer/harder foam.
Has there been any indication form Toyota that they’re going to address/fix
this problem?

are you talking about where the plastic dash contacts the windshield?? try
spraying some ArmorAll or Lexol Vinyl protectant down along the edge where
the dash meets the windshield ("lube" it if you will), clean up the
overspray. the way the dash material rubs along the "dry" glass produces
squeaking noises.
i don’t think this is a big issue, rather just a nice tight fit amongst the
components (unlike that of some domestic vehicles).
please don’t forget, you bought a truck and not a car. there are bound to be
sqeaks and rattles, and perhaps not as comfy as the passenger car line such
as Camry, etc.
i never heard of a "rattle" warranty. B-to-B should be 3yr or 36k miles. try
another dealer.

My ’00 PreRunner has no squeaks, no rattles. For the money the poster paid,
he deserves his new truck to be w/o either.
Stew
There are bound to be squeks and rattles ? And becuse Its a truck It’s ok ?
Maybe for you it is. I did have this same problem with my 2001 tacoma and by
god the dealer fixed it.
After the 3rd time they had it I called Toyota. They Said it would be fixed
and it was.
I did not pay 24,0000 to hear rattles and I would not put up with it and
should no one else have too.
Never understand the Hey its a Truck. I’ve been in some trucks that ride
better then cars.
