ADD – Lock-out Conversion
My 1990 4Runner is equipped with Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD).
It works great, but I have a bad vibration coming from my passenger side
axle and since 4 wheel drive is seldom used, I would like to convert my
full-time axles to locking hubs.
I really don’t want to pay the price for the WARN brand name. What would be
the next best aftermarket hubs to choose from? Also, where would I find the
best price?

91 4runner engine ticking?
91 4runner ticks when at idle or low RPM. The noise is on the drivers
side. It is the valvetrain-I think? The 4runner has 220,000 miles on it.
Please help!
1989 SR5 Pickup, V6 3.0EFI, poor torque
Make: Toyota
Model: SR5 Truck
Engine: 3.0 L V6 EFI
Transmission: 5-Speed Manual, 4×4 ADD
———-
According to Toyota Customer Service, no recalls or defects are
documented for this VIN.
———-
I purchased the vehicle at ~72,000 miles. Excellent engine, transmission,
and accessory performance; body in good condition. "A real cherry." I’ve
performed routine maintenance consistently, including engine oil, air
filter, driveshaft lubrication, fuel injector additives, etc. Vehicle is
operated in southeastern Wisconsin, a region where reformulated gasoline
is used. MTBE blends were tried, but at present only ethanol blends are
in use. Vehicle doesn’t seem to like the reformulated blends, but have
had no severe problems (repeated stalling, etc.).
Here’s the problem: The vehicle began to suffer inferior engine
performance beginning at ~90,000 miles. Engine began to surge/stumble
under specific driving conditions: initially, at 35-40 mph in 4th gear on
level pavement. Over the next 10,000 miles, problem developed into
diminished torque across the curve, but with notably poorer performance
below 2800 rpm. When accelerating, engine feels "boggy" or seems to
"drag" until 2800 rpm. At 2800, "drag" seems to suddenly dissipate, and
engine develops better torque up through 4000+ rpm. Even then, however,
torque is not as good as before the problem developed. There has been a
corresponding drop in fuel economy, from ~18MPG average to ~12MPG,
because I have to run the engine at higher speeds to get the power I need.
This is road mileage. I’m not typically too aggressive on the pedals.
Vehicle mileage is now ~126,000. Over the last 35,000 miles, I’ve
achieved marginal performance improvements by changing spark plugs
(Nippon Denso truck plugs, recommended by the Toyota dealership, deliver
performance much better than with Bosch Platinums gapped to factory spec),
plug wires, distributor & cap, oxygen sensor. Taking advice I found in a
thread on alt.autos.toyota.trucks (thanks, mud…@gte.net), I recently
achieved significant performance improvement by resetting the EFI
computer. (Removed the EFI fuse for ~10 minutes while filling fuel tank,
when engine was near normal operating temperature.) I still experience a
bit of drag until 2800 RPM, though.
Seeking advice in further diagnosing/resolving the engine performance
issue. I suspect I’m dealing with a combination of smaller issues, but
wonder if there’s a magic bullet or at least a sensible starting point.
Why 2800 RPM? Does some vacuum function engage/disengage as a function of
engine speed? Does 2800 have some significance to the EFI computer? I’ve
speculated, but lack the knowledge & experience to develop testable
hypotheses.
I’ve been told to change my fuel filter, but the flare fitting is corroded
to the line, so I’m torquing the hard fuel line when I try to loosen the
fitting from the filter threads. If I damage or crimp the line I’ll
wind up having to take down the fuel tank, and I’d prefer to avoid that
project if I can help it. The dealership mechanic said I should "never"
change my fuel filter, unless there’s a real problem with it. (I think
maybe he just didn’t feel like getting involved with it.) I also doubt
that the fuel filter is involved, since my exhaust typically smells richer
than I think it should.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

95 T100 Starting Problem
do I need help…
The first time it would not start I got out and looked under the hood. All
looked OK to me. After about 5 minutes I tried again and it started. That
sounds like it was flooded but I am sure it was not.
That was a month ago then yesterday:
It would not start. Towed to the dealer. Would not start at dealer. They fooled
with it all day. Dealer kept it overnight. It started first try the next
morning. The dealer has no clue as to what the problem is. The check engine
light was on yesterday at the dealer. The dealer said the check engine light
was on even when the truck was turned off and the key was removed. Is that
possible?

Hail to the Thief!
Bush, who secured the Electoral College majority required to be the 43rd
president Monday, lost the nation’s popular vote to Gore by 539,897 votes,
according to a final vote tally compiled by a nonpartisan research group
from state reports. Slightly more than half of 1 percent of the overall vote
count separated them.

Amother indicator that Bushes Baby Boy is already the lamest of lame ducks.
If we can just get through the next two years without Dubya screwing with
things too much (maybe he will develop a hobby to occupy his free
time…like reading), the Repubs will lose both houses of congress and two
years later the White House. President Hillary has a very nice ring to it,
don’t you think? Let the games begin! Tally-ho!
