I have a 2003 4Runner SR5 V8 with 3500 miles on it now. I’ve had a
very strange power loss problem on four occasions now, which I have
been able to overcome (so far) by stopping the vehicle, shutting it
down completely, and restarting. (This indicates to me the engine
computer must be running Windows
This problem’s symptoms: You press the accelerator (say to go up a
hill or leave a stop light) and the engine spins up to high RPM (4000
or 4500 RPM). However, the vehicle barely moves. The first and
second times were on a flat stretch, it took a good ten seconds to
make it up to 20 MPH. The third time, it was going up a hill, and I
barely had the power to duck into a side street to reboot the system.
The first time this happened, I drove about three miles before I had
the idea to try rebooting the vehicle. So I spent that time going
over the indicator lights, shifter position, cruise control, etc.
Nothing unusual was indicated.
I told the dealer, they suggested I had something stuck under the
accelerator. When I told them that was unlikely with the engine
hitting 4500 RPM, they gave me a blank stare. They found no problem.
Besides the fact that I don’t trust the vehicle to get me home from a
trip, this particular problem can actually kill me and my wife, since
we do a lot of mountain driving on 2-lane roads, and I pass other
vehicles when needed. If the engine dies at the wrong time during a
passing manuever…
Anybody have any ideas on this? Or want to buy a used (and unloved)
4Runner?
