Rough Idle

I’ve got an ’87 PU, 2wd, with 22re which idles very rough when particularly
when cold but also when warm. I’ve changed wires, plugs, rotor, etc. as part
of regular tune-up and while this helps a little, it still isn’t
particularly smooth. Seems to run fine at higer rpms. Would turning up the
idle speed be a legitimate fix for this or should I be looking deeper for
another problem?

Thanks for any insight.

22r Emissions question

Regristration is up again, so i went to the emissions testing place today.
The engine failed on the high idle CO reading. The standard is 1.20 and my
truck is reading 2.11; any idea what causes this/ how to fix it?

I think the 2204 will have a bigger cab, and be self lowering when the
doors are opened.  ;)

(Sorry, tough job but somebody’s got to do it!)

Re: 04 taco

The differential lock is only for low speeds.  Since both wheels are locked
when engaged, the inside wheel will spin when turning a corner, which makes
using it on pavement not advisable.  Unless you intend to go off road I
doubt you will ever need it.

The mileage on my ’04 Tacoma, V6 has been disapointing.  I’m getting an
average of about 15 mpg after about 8 tankfulls, a far cry from the EPA
listed figures.  I’m not a grumpy old man but my driving style is definitely
old-fart style.

I’ll stay clear of the bedliner issue.  I just don’t like the idea of the
spray-on types.

1992 pickup 2wd 4cyl fuel leak

My 1992 pickup recently started leaking gas from the fuel line(s) around
the tank.  If you peered between the bed and the cab you could actually
see it spurting out.

Well I know nothing of vechicles other than oil changes and such, but my
dad is a former mechanic (now a welder), he came down and we lowered the
tank and put new hoses on.  This appeared to stop the leak, it
definitely stopped the spurting.

However the leak is back, it is nowhere near as bad as before, but we
can’t tell where the gas is coming from.  And someone mentioned to us
that if one of the metal lines was rusty and leaking that they attached
to a different part and that whole system would need to be replaced (I
can’t for the life of me remember the part name).  Anyone heard of this
problem, have any suggestions?  I don’t really want to put more than 3
or 400 bucks into the truck as it was my wife’s brothers for 10 years
and he didn’t take very good care of it, though even without proper
maintanence it has over 200k on it.

Any comments, help, suggestions would be much appreciated.

thanks

Exhaust manifold gasket question

My 1981 Toyota pickup with a carbureted 22r failed the Virginia safety
inspection for an exhaust manifold leak.

The inspectors were not very forthcoming with additional details so I
checked it myself out using the "Rubber Hose" test. Holding one end of
the hose to my ear and placing the other against the manifold at
various points, I located a hissing sound between the cylinder head
and the top of the manifold towards the rear.

I’m hopeful that I can just replace the gasket myself and be on my way
but there is one catch that I would appreciate some feedback on.

The bolts that attach the manifold to the cylinder head — where the
leak is — appear to be fine (rusty, for sure), but two of the bolts
that attach the manifold to the tailpipe have broken heads. I am not
detecting an exhaust leak there.

Since repairing those broken bolts is WAY beyond me, I am facing a
dilemna:

Can I unbolt the manifold from the cylinder head, slip in a new
gasket, bolt it back together and head on down to get reinspected?

OR do I need to find a mechanic with access to a machine shop to
address the manifold/tailpipe connection before I can address the leak
between the manifold and the cylinder head?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might share!

A quick question about matching paint.

I have a major ding on the hood of my new 04 Tacoma. It’s silver (isn’t
everyones?) How do I go about repairing it. Do I go to the dealer to get
a match for the paint, or what? It looks like the paint is down to black
underneath the ding, chip, or whatever you call it. When we have had
other trucks, they gave a small bottle of matching paint. Is that
available from the dealer with the 2004 Tacomas? TIA

truck bed diff years

Hi.  Does anyone know if a 1990 style bed fit on an 1983 style frame long
box?  I mean as a direct bolt on.  If not, is there a lot involved to make
it fit?

Wierd rattle sound & mileage question

I have a 94 4Runner v6 that has an interesting sound coming from around
the glove box area. It started yesterday while the A/C was on. When the
A/C is off, no sound. When on, I hear the rattle repeat every 5 or so
seconds and the engine rpm drops. I know the A/C causes the engine to
drop rpm a tad, so Im wondering if its some A/C related switch or valve
going bad. Maybe Im way off. Any ideas?

Also, just for kicks, this is the 3VZ-E engine, and I know they’ve had
head gasket problems. I have about 150k on the engine now, and the head
gasket was replaced under the prior owner, and timing belt at 115k. Im
curious to know how many miles other folks with this engine have pulled.
I have been told to expect 200k+ before major work. Im pretty anal about
my maintenance. Any good news for a broke college student? :)
