I’ve heard on this newsgroup that the 22R is about the best engine that
Toyota ever made. I’m kinda interested in getting a new Toyota truck and I
was wondering what trucks that they used these engines in?

Not being used anymore, at least here in the U.S. They were used in the
trucks from the very early ’80′s up to ’95.

Well, the 20R was actually more durable because of the double row chain,
otherwise, the 22R was as durable. 20R came out in 1975, ran till 1980,
then the 22R replaced it till 1995. It basically ran unchanged for 20 years.

i ran a 22re over 400,000 miles without ever doing more than changing the
oil and adjusting my valves as scheduled. how much of a difference did that
double chain _really_ make? also, how does the new 2.7 compare to the rock
solid 22r/e?

Would I be able to find something in the range of a 85′ – 92′ with about the
same durability?

absolutely, if it has been maintained properly. my ’86 4 runner was running
strong in excess of 400k miles when i sold her. my ’85 was running strong
in excess of 262k miles when i sold it, and a compression test showed the
weakest cylinder was within 85% of a brand new engine. i had to replace
alternators and water pumps and all the regular maintenance items but i
never had to tear into the engine for anything. the most i ever did was
adjust the valves.
when buying a 22r/22re, mileage isnt as important as proper maintenance.

Although very dependable they are noisy and don’t produce a
lot of power – ha, hence the longevity!
Did they ever make one in a v6 version?

Well, we have never replaced a chain ass’y on a 20R ever. The 2.4 and
2.7 should be the next rock solid 4 cylinder from Toyota!

You can’t just take an engine and "make it into a v6". An entirely new
block, crankshaft, cams, etc, etc has to be designed.

I have a ’98 2wd 4Runner 2.7 manual with 119,000 mi. It runs like new.
Looking forward to my second and third (and dare I hope fourth) thousand
miles. I know I am in the minority, but I think the 2.7 is entirely
adequate when mated to the 5-speed. I drove several 2.7 autos, but found
their performance unexciting. It took me nearly a year to find my 4Runner,
but I couldn’t be happier. I average 21-22 mpg in mixed city/hwy driving,
and have done over 26 mpg on the road. Quite a truck.

My 22R is being fixed as we speak. I dogged the engine a little too much
over the years. I had it at a jobsite in the cold north one year and didn’t
change the oil for 10,000 miles. I have to say one thing for it though. It
still runs on low compression where most cars would just stop. If I
remember correctly, the operating psi is 185 and the minimum is 125. Mine
was operating at 99. Toyota claimed it was impossible, but I drove off
their lot and their high prices. I’m looking forward to having a little pep
again.
