Here in Illinois thats what the sticker is on a 2003 4-Runner Limited  with
the Navigation system. Anyone who has seen the new Truck give your opinion
please.

Thanks, Bob

As much as I like the 4-runner (and having owned one) it’s not a
$40,000+ truck.  It’s not really even a $35,000+ truck. Sheep just
keep paying it over and over for the name and they keep charging it.
The truck is great, but sheesh… and that better be a V8 4×4 with
virtually every option (even the dual tire group if they still offer
that) checked. Even then start considering a fair percentage down from
    MSRP.

  2. Ignore the MSRP …. The base INVOICE for the ’02 LIMITED 2WD is $29.8
… With typical options, figure a selling price about $32K … The
    ’03 shouldn’t be much more.

Even better is to ignore the LIMITED entirely … The better value is
the SR5 – especially the SPORT EDITION … $23.5 base invoice for the
    ’02 … Selling price about $26.5

Only an idiot would walk into a dealership and pay sticker (or more)
    for a ’03 4Runner that’s scarce … Wait a few months AFTER the
initial sales excitement dissipates …. You’ll find much greater
pricing flexibility AFTER the initial demand is satisfied and supplies
    are greater.

    YMMV

I think that the 4runner has really gotten too pricy to justify purchase
anymore. When I purchased mine, in 2001 I really had to think about if the
extra cost was worth it. If you compare your vehicle to a similar SR5,
you’ll see that the difference is a lot for just a few extra features.

I personally couldn’t justify spending $8k for just leather seats. (ignoring
electronic seats, heated seats, digital temp control and wood grain trim) I
don’t need electronic seats, since I’m the only driver, how often will i
need to adjust the seats? and digital temp control is for me an un-needed
    feature.

Additionally ignore the MSRP, and start negotiating a bit under the invoice
price, nobody pays MSRP, unless demand is high, if so wait a few months, and
get a good deal after all the morons with money to burn have done so.

Consider looking at the Ford Explorer? I think much more reasonably priced.

  4. The 2001 and 2002 4Runners sold for below invoice for much
of their model years. Big incentives and dealer discounts
kept the prices down. It’s always the way Toyota has done
things; have a high MSRP so dealers can gouge people that
don’t know any better, but provide big factory to dealer
and factory to buyer incentives and cut rate financing.

The last two Toyotas we bought we paid well under invoice.
Invoice has become the defacto retail price that anyone
can get via a buying service, unless it’s one of the rare
models that is in short supply.

In three months the 03 4WD V6 SR5 will be under $30K with
typical options (convenience package, etc.). The fools that
must have the new model right when it is introduced keep
the prices high for a few months, but the excitement soon
    dissipates.

  5. Buy a 2003 Volvo XC90 for the same price. It is a lot more of a vehicle. I
own a Tacoma and love it, but a Volvo SUV for the same price as a
    Toyota…no brainer.

  6.  I own a 2001 Tacoma Dbl Cab 4wd and love it. I noticed our local dealer had
4 or 5 new 4Runners on the lot so I had to check them out. I was not
impressed with the new design at all, I thought Toyota would  give it a
rugged look and they did`nt as far as I`m concerned. I`m sure hope the 2004
Tacoma has a better look then that. The quality is there as we`ve come to
    expect from Toyota however.

  7. I thought the 4Runner and Tacoma share the front half of the chassis?

I am going to assume that the 4runner and Tacoma will be similar? I
drove a new 4runner limited yesterday and it was more "Tahoe slash
Danali" in room and comfort than spartan toyota. It felt much wider
and plush than the older modle. For me it felt more in the range of
the Tundra than the Tacoma… although I find the Tundra… too big.
This was a good size for my preference. I am now curious when to
expect the 04 Tacoma truck… so I can upgrade from my 02 Tacoma.

  8. A little info from "The University of Toyota":

all-new model for US, Japan, & export markets
    a. new model related to the Land Cruiser Prado, a 7/8-size
Land Cruiser not previously offered in US
    b. severs the connection to the Tacoma truck line

  9. >Ignore the MSRP …. The base INVOICE for the ’02 LIMITED 2WD is $29.8

    Yeah, but who wants a 2WD 4Runner?  A 2WD 4Runner is bordering on being
blasphemous!  You may as well just get a Highlander.
And worse yet, the ’02s are "out of style" in most consumer’s eyes (and mine,
even though I still think they look nice) because of the ’03s arrival.

    >Even better is to ignore the LIMITED entirely … The better value is
    >the SR5 – especially the SPORT EDITION

I agree, the Sport Edition is the one I would get.  I am not particularly fond
of leather seats.  I cannot just get comfortable in them.  I prefer cloth or
velour seats for the fact that I can be comfortable in them, as well as not go
    sliding around while turning.

    True.

    That’s a good idea.

Yeah, but it’s very ugly.  Especially those CRV-wannabe taillights.  And plus
Volvo is built by Ford, and the fact that Volvo quality went down since Ford
acquired them (look at the original S80s problems, and you’ll see what I mean),
are enough reasons to avoid it, IMHO.

    I’ll pass.

I agree.  I don’t like leather seats because I can never get comfortable in
them.  I prefer cloth seats of SR5 and Sport Editions because of that and I
don’t like sliding around when I’m turning or cornering.

Good idea.  There will be plenty of ’03 4Runners to choose from, and hence be
    greater breathing room on price.

For most folks, 2WD is perfectly adequate for 90% of your driving
conditions … In addition, the simpler design improves vehicle
    reliability and maintainability.

As for style, the ’03s were clearly designed to appeal to soccer moms
… The 02s are much more muscular and truck-like.
