The antennae on my 1997 4runner stopped going up and down — it makes a
whirring noise when trying to go down and a clanking noise when trying to go
up. What could be wrong? Will I have to remove the fender to get to it?

Guess it’s that time of year for power antennae to stop working
It’s likely the antennae is just gunked up. Try "helping" it to full
extension (pull on the tip while the motor is trying to extend it), then
clean it off with a solvent based cleaner (WD-40 works). Then, lube it up
with an oil like 3in1. It may take a couple of times to get it smooth as
silk, but if it works, it will save some serious $$$.

Sounds like your mast is broken. It’s an easy fix, though. I did mine 3
days after buying my ’92 4Runner about a month ago. You only have to remove
the fender liner to get to it. And that’s only if the plastic "cable" is
broken. Took me about 30 minutes to fix. I got the mast at my local
dealership for about $40, or so I think. I honestly can’t remember. The
fact that it’s making noise is a good sign, though, because you know your
motor is working & it should just be a matter of replacing the mast &
"cable" (plastic line) that moves it up and down… Good luck.

I’ve got a question for you mechanic types out there…
I love my ’95 4runner… unfortunately… this is about my 1993 Acura Vigor
w118k miles & auto transmission started making some nasty noises. I’ve
owned it for the last 5 years and about a month ago, the oil light came on
and stayed on for a short while. I added some oil as it was a little low
and the light went out. Other than that – ???
My wife was driving home today – calls me from the vehicle as the oil light
came on – flickers on and off at first, then stays on. A little later it
begins to make some noises – and not the little "lifter" (or whatever it has
been doing) noises from the last year or two. It sounded like a "clicking"
getting a little louder….
I told her to pull it over and shut the engine off asap. She MAY have
driven around 5 minutes (good estimate) with it doing some "clicking".
I took off and met her and checked the oil level – just fine. I turn it
over so I can hear it and sure enough – it is a loud/pronounced clicking.
Does this sound like –
Oil "sending unit"?
Oil pump?
Something else I don’t know about??
I have the factory manual and I can see the oil pump replacement would be a
pretty big job for me… (loud groan here can be heard).
Any advice? Ideas?? Suggestions???
Many thanks,
Bubba
Mine broke a few years back and I did take the fender liner out, but in
retrospect I regret it. If I was you, the first thing I’d do is to take the
lock nut off the bottom of the mast and pull the mast out. If you find that
the plastic "cable" is stripped or just broken off leaving a small bit in
the motor assembly, then just buy a new mast, turn the radio on, and feed
the new mast in while someone turns the radio off. I think I paid under $50
for the part. I don’t think a small piece of old "cable" left in the motor
assembly will hurt anything. It coils up into a good-sized cylinder with
some room for an old piece. If you decide to take the motor assembly out,
beware that the plastic clips used to hold the fender liner in aren’t really
made to come out (or at least I don’t know how to get them out without
destroying them).

Hi Gene,
If you get the antenna up and clean it with solvent, do not oil it.
The oil will only attract dirt and grime and make it will stick again.

If it’s only the plastic cable inside the mast being broken then it’s
a easy R&R.
Buy a new mast and with a friend (it’s easier), but it can be done by
yourself. Have your friend turn on the radio and the antenna motor
will run as if it is pushing the antenna out. Now get the new mast
ready and have all the plastic cable out and push it into the hole
where the mast goes in. Push it in until it stops. Now at this point
have your friend turn off the radio and the motor will start to pull
and retract the cable back in. I don’t remember how I had the
alignment of the teeth on the cable but I do remember having to give
it a couple of tries as I was by myself when replacing the mast.
I don’t know when the broken part of the plastic cable went. But the
new antenna runs up and down just fine.
