I have an 82′ Toyota pickup. The heater and the temp gauge wasn’t working at
all so I changed out the thermostat on it. Now the temp gauge works ok and
the heater works to some extent, but for some reason after it’s been running
a while, the heater will stop and nothing but cold air will blow out or
either the defrost vents and the heater ducts. I turn the heater off for a
while and then turn the heater back on and it works fine for a while. Any
ideas as to why it stops working on me? I really need some heat for the
winter. I’ve considered buying one of those heaters that plug into the
cigarette lighter, but first I have to get my cigarette lighter working, but
that’s a last resort.

Is the engine using any coolant or do you hear any gurgling sounds behind the dash with the heater on? If so, it may have a
head gasket leak letting exhaust gas into the cooling system. Otherwise, you could just have some air trapped in the cooling
system that needs to be purged. You could also try backflushing the heater core (pull both hoses and flush water in from the
outlet side). Also make sure the heater valve is not clogged and is opening fully with the control cable. What temp t-stat did
you install?

Nope, didn’t hear any gurgling soundds.
If so, it may have a head gasket leak letting exhaust gas into the cooling

system that needs to be purged. You could also try backflushing the heater
core (pull both hoses and flush water in from the outlet side).

it as you mentioned. I did however leave the plug off at the bottom and ran
several gallon of water through the system to get all the old antifreeze
out.

I’m not sure about this one. I just told the guy at AutoZone what kind of
truck I had and he gave looked it up on the computer and gave me a
thermostat for it.
There is a valve that opens and closes the water to the heater core. It is
hooked up to the hot cold leaver on the dash.The heater hoses hook up to it
on the fire wall on the drivers side sorta behind the air cleaner. I had
this same problem with my 81 a few years back and traced the problem back to
that. The valve gets corroded and stops opening or closing causing your
problems. I freed mine up with wd 40 . I did eventually change it right out
though. It seemed to seize up again a few months later. Hope that helps ya
out.

Check your coolant level.

The t-stat temp should be stamped on it. You can check it by putting it in a pot of hot water on the stoe with a good
thermometer and see that it opens around the temp stamped on the unit. I always check my new t-stats for proper opening before
installing them. New means only that, new, not that the part is good and works as it was designed. I also ONLY use Toyota
t-stats, never had a problem with them, always have problems with other brands:

I can’t remember how to "extract" the check engine trouble codes on a 1985
4×4 22REC Auto. I remember it involves a jumper wire and counting the blinks
of the check engine idiot light…but I don’t remember what connector or
where it is located. Thanx in advance
