I’d like to find out what speakers will fit in my 4Runner before I rip
the doors open – can someone tell me what the largest speakers are that
will fit in the front and rear doors? It looks like there are probably
6.5′s in the front and 4.25′s in the rear judging by the grilles, but I
was able to replace the OEM 4.25′s with 6.5′s in my old Celica and MR2,
so I’m wondering if I can do the same with these.
While I’m at it, if anyone has any tips on lock-securing a sub box in
the rear, that would be great. I have a good alarm installed now, but
I’m still not wild about letting a box sit unsecured.
Thanks!

Whoops – just wanted to clarify: I meant 5.25′s, not 4.25′s.

Try crutchfield.com. They have a feature to tell you sizes, etc.
Cheers

Damn, I didn’t even think about that and I’m a loyal Crutchfield
customer. Unfortunately, they don’t list the rear speaker sizes at all –
just the fronts, which are actually 6.75". I called them, though –
5.25′s in the rear, though apparently it’s some ridiculous enclosure
that doesn’t work well with aftermarket speakers unless you do some
jerry-rigging.

Its probably the same enclosure that my 91 Runner had.
Its made out of plastic, and ported.
There was also some sort of amp, or crossover mounted inside each box.
They were actually 4′s in the back of mine, and I tried modifying the
plastic box to fit an 5.25 and it didn’t sound good at all. If you want a
larger speaker, I would make your own box and find away to mount it back
there.
Chris.
