99 Tacoma sticky 2nd gear

Guys and Gals…

Sorry i’ve been away so long…I generally am not on line at home and I stopped
running aol at work, so I haven’t been lurking around here in a while…

In addition to the 91 landcruiser (wife’s) and my 99 Tacoma TRD 4WD, I am now
the kinda proud owner of an MGB.  ITs a long story how I got her, and it is in
fantastic condition.  I’m a toyota and an Alfa Romeo man myself, so if anyone
is interested in purchasing her, e-mail me at wmat…@amwater.com and i’ll send
you some photos and information.

(by the way, i’ll swap the B for an 82-89 Alfa GTV-6 or an older GTV if anyone
is in a bartering mood….)

Now….my technical question…

MY beloved 99 tacoma is having a shifting problem-2nd gear specifically.

On cold mornings, she is hessitant to go into 2nd.  When the truck warms up, it
is smoother but not like it should be.

Before I drop the trany and look for a suspect syncro, does anyone have any
suggestions or quick (eg inexpensive) fixes?

I did remove the console and sprayed some white lithium grease down the boot
and that seems to help.  With the motor off, I can run through the gears like
new money.  Whilst driving, it is somewhat better, but not where it needs to
be.

Please e-mail my response as well as post to the group…again at

wmat…@amwater.com

I love you guys and DEATH TO NISSAN…

Standard problem, shift a little slower, or double shift.  K

Easy, change to a lighter gear oil.

I had that same problem with my 97 Taco. Let me ask you….. Is it also hand
to shift OUT of first? I had a hard time shift out of first AND into second.
I took it in to the dealership for them to look at it and they said it was
normal. So I asked….does shifting from 1st to second feel the same at 2nd
to 3rd etc? The guy said no but he had no answer why it was like that. The
only suggestion he had was to put in Synthetic Tanny oil. That made a
difference right away. It wasn’t great but it was much better.

Thanks….I try replacing the xmsn fluid w/ synthetic next…and yes…it is
sticky coming from first into second…but second to third and so on is
    aproblematic…

by the way, the white lithium grease down the boot seem to help as well….

  5. admin says:

Whether you’re using dino or synth, make sure you do not exceed 75w, as 80w will
really make it hard to shift.

I like Redline MTL or MT-90 synthetic transmission lube, I have some
info on what I use on this page:

    http://4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4×4/index.shtml#VendorLinks

MTL is a very thin gear oil.  Both have friction modifiers to help the
synchros come up to speed quicker.

My ’94 4×4 is the same way, Either shift slower or double clutch(which
amounts to shifting slower). Yes, I know double clutching spins the
input shaft between gears, making a shift easier. Especially,
    downshifting.  K
