Cold start problem

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:50 pm

Hi,

I have a 92 V6 4×4 that is experiencing severe cold start problems.
The problem originally was a rough idle (as if the plug wires were
crossed up) at startup that would smooth out within a mile of careful
driving and would occur intermittently.  It has gotten progressively
worse to the point that it occurs with every cold start and now takes
several attempts just to start, and the idle is so rough that the
engine and exhaust are visibly shaking.  It still clears up after
warming up.  No check engine codes are reported.

If anyone has any idea what the problem might be, I would appreciate
your input.  Thanks in advance.

Darrel

p.s. I live in Hawaii so the "cold" starting really isn’t very cold at
all.

  1. When was your last tuneup/spark plug/wire replacement?

  3. HOW ABOUT HOOKING UP A SCANNER AND SEEING IF THE COOLANT TEMP SENSOR IS
GIVING PROPER READINGS TO THE ECU, THIS WOULD BE THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF
POOR COLD ENGINE PERFORMANCE. sorry about the caps.

You are correct that the coolant temp sensor is the first
recommendation for this problem per the factory repair manual.
However, the location of that sensor, between the engine and firewall,
is such that I don’t think I could get my hands in there with an ohm
meter.  But I may have to give it a try since the problem has
deteriorated to the point where I cannot even get the truck to start!
Right now I’m trying fruitlessly to replace the pcv valve since I had
a spare anyway, and I’m about ready to give up on that.  Any
suggestion on that?  I can get a needle nose on the valve but the
angle precludes me from applying enough force to pull it out. : (
    Thank you for the advice.

  5. I have a 1993 Toyota 4X4 with 105,000 miles on it. Four weeks ago, when I
would start it up in the morning, it would idle rough. I thought it may be a
clogged cold start injector so I got some fuel injector cleaner and tried
it. This did no good. Then I changed the wires, plugs, distributor cap, rotor
button, air filter, and fuel filter. This also did not do any good. Then two
days later I noticed it was running warmer than usual on my way home from
work and when I got home, water was dripping out of the tailpipe. I filled
it full of water and carried to the Toyota dealership where I live and they
told me Toyota would take care of everything! They even supplied me with a
2001 Camry with all the goodies to drive for three days  while my truck was
in the shop. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even buy the truck new. I
bought it off a used car lot with almost 40,000 miles on it and they still
took care of me. Toyota had a recall a few years back on the head gaskets
and if yours has not been done, then they will do yours for free too!
Originally the recall was for 8 years or 100,000 miles but they  later
extended it to unlimited age or mileage. Oh Oh, What a Feeling!!!!!!!! My
truck is running like a top again. I also had the timing belt and water pump
replaced while they had it tore down. Since they were right there at them,
it cost very little extra to get these items replaced other than paying for
    the parts.

    I hope this helps,

    Chuck,

Glad to hear you were well taken care of.  I too had the recall work
done last year, in fact they gave me a whole new block assembly.

As for my problem, I finally managed to replace the pvc valve.  What a
bear!  And to my astonishment the truck fired right up and idled
smoothly.  Whether or not this is the fix or a return to the
intermittentness of the problem, I have no idea.  If the pvc valve was
the problem, I can’t see why.  Even the repair manual did not include
this as one of the many listed possible problems.  I’m just glad to be
    on the road again.

Thank you to you and all who responded,

    Darrel
