Driveline Thump

Have a ’99 Tacoma with 67K on it. Over the last month or so it has developed a very noticeable fall in the driveline when releasing pressure on the brakes after anything other than a smooth slow stop. The auto tranny lever and the xfer case lever move almost an inch, one forward and one backwards. I suspected the mount at the rear of the tranny on the crossmember but there appears to be no visible signs of failure. Have a hard time thinking the 4 cyl would break an engine mount.

Anyone had similar problems or have some insight before I take it to the dealer and do the "find what’s wrong with it" thing?

Thanks,
Phill

You’re experiencing axle wrap, a very common occurence on Tacomas.  My 99′
V6 PreRunner (64K miles) has the same condition, and has had it since I purchased
    the vehicle new.

Taking it to the dealer will only result in them telling you it’s "normal".
I did have my leaf packs replaced at around 30K miles, but I had complained
about squeaking, the axle wrap still occurs.

Bottom line, the dealer won’t do a thing for you.  You’re better off either
adding an add-a-leaf, or looking into one of the many load-leveling add-ons
like Roadmaster Active Suspensions, etc., which claim to cure the axle wrap.

For a technical explanation, see this link:

For general discussion about Tacomas in general, I highly recommend Delphi
Forums’ Tacoma Territory Off-Road Association (TTORA) at:

    http://www.ttora.com

There you’ll find hundreds of members discussing everything you’ve always
wanted to know about your Taco and more.

    Hope this helps.

I’m very intrigued with the "Roadmaster" system.  I looks like a good
design.  I’ll always have an at least several hundred # load in my
Tacoma’s box and I’m worried about "rear sag" coming on in the future,
handling deterioration, etc. so I think this could be a good
    preventive measure.

My specialty here is naive questions, so,…Are there any warrantee
considerations when adding a system like this to a new vehicle?

I don’t personally own the Roadmaster system, though I’ve long drooled for
one.  I just haven’t found the cash at the same time I’ve had the inclination
    to buy one.

I’m not aware of any warranty issues when installing the system.  I don’t
think you’re removing any factory parts to install the Roadmaster.

Your warranty question is probably better posed either to Roadmaster themselves
or your local dealer.  I wouldn’t foresee any problems though.

If you do indeed end up purchasing the system, please let me know the price/installation
difficulty/etc.  I would very much like to get one myself someday (to combat
rear-sag, axle-wrap and help level my load when towing my boat).

You can email me at tamu1…@ev1.net.

    Good luck!

My Tacoma, as well as my 4Runner both experience this same symptom, but this is normal.

Yeah, I filled out their form at the web site, got a response, $229
shipped.  No local sellers/installers where I am (southern Minnesota).
It’s something I might do in the event of rear-sag.

They said if I had ANY mechanical ability I could do it.  I watched
their demo video with those public TV mechanics who’s name’s escape
me, but they had a full vehicle hoist with jack-stands, etc, etc.  I
don’t know if I want to tackle it without that setup or not ;-)

Someone may have already said, but it’s most definitely axle wrap.  Stop
too quickly, let off of the brake, "Thump!".  Then I put in a lift that
used blocks in the rear and forget it, it got 20 times worse.  I put in
some traction bars from Pro-comp and it cleared up immediately!  It’s
    worth the limited off-road articulation.
