My 1988 Toyota Truck 2WD 2BBL Carburetor has rough starting problem.

If it has been sitting for over 8 hours it blows black soot after
start up out of the exhaust for the first few seconds after I press on
the gas peddle.

Then it idles rough for about the first 20 minutes whenever I am at a
stop light. It seems to have a wave sound like it wants to stall.
Sometimes after I get to my destination it still runs about 2 or 5
seconds after I turn it off.
The odd part is sometimes after I run the truck for 20 minutes and
turn off the engine and restart it runs great.

Please advise how I can fix this problem?

Any help diagnosing the following noise would be much appreciated.

The truck is a brand new 2005 Tundra DoubleCab 4×4 (275 miles). It
starts from cold normally. I drive it at least long enough for
everything to get warmed up. I then turn it off, and wait between 15
minutes (approx) and 2 hours (approx), and then start it again. Right
as the starter engages, or a fraction of a second after, I hear a
metallic sounding clang (sort of hollow sounding), though the engine
starts just fine. If I immediatly turn the engine off and immediately
start it again, I do not hear the clang. If I wait less than 15
minutes (approx) from when it was last running, I do not hear the
clang. It does it regardless of whether the A/C is running. I was
able to get an audio recording and can email it to anyone interested
(it’s only a few seconds, so the file size is very small). I live 2
hours from a dealer, so if I can get an idea of whether it’s something
to be worried about without the long drive, I’d appreciate it.

> Recently bought my daughter an older (1991) 4Runner with the V6 and
> automatic transmission.

> Seems I may have made a big mistake in engine choice. Don’t get me wrong,
it
> runs very well but it doesn’t seem very powerful (someone told me thier
4cyl
> / 5-spd will run rings around it) and I read that the gas mileage isn’t
> great but today I finally got an accurate reading from my daughter and she
> got 13.4 mpg. This is mostly around town but dang! Is this normal for
these
> beasts?

Sounds pretty normal to me. My ’94 Toyota pickup with the 22RE 4-banger got
15-16 mpg around town and 17-18 mpg highway. My 3.0 liter V-6 ’92
Mitsubishi Montero got about the same and my 4.7 liter ’04 Tundra gets 12-13
mpg in town and 15-17 mpg highway and so did my ’97 Suburban. That’s just
the typical range of mileage you get with a 4×4/SUV class of vehicle.

> Are there any little mods I can do to improve this other than just
> the proper maintainence items and tire pressure?

Short of removing the grill emblem and rolling a Honda Civic under it, nope.

VLJ
—

The wife made me buy a pickup! She got tired of me telling her I could not
do the home improvement projects she wanted because I could not haul home
lumber, etc., in my 1991 Ford Tempo. You may try to use this line yourself!

I have the Access cab, V-6, with the 60/40 seats. The seat back is too tall
to easily reach over into the back seat. We are used to carrying stuff in
the back seat that can be reached from the front seat. This is important on
long trips, i.e. cokes, extra maps, etc.

We are looking for some kind of storage device that will hang over the front
side of the drivers seat that can be used for storage such as maps, AAA
travel books, etc. Can anyone suggest a product?

Are there any devices available that attach to or hang over the drive shaft
hump on the floor? Anything set on the hump rolls off in turns, I.E. kleenex
box, etc. Even a small box to throw a tissue box, pen/pencils, cell phone,
would be handy. On trips it is going to be inconvenient having to stop, get
out, open the back door and then grab what I want off the rear seat.

I found an overhead shelf that is installed where the stock sun visor screws
in but I can’t tell from the photo if it blocks the stock mirror or the
stowed items can be secured from falling/rolling out on my head. The Mrs.
would not be impressed with something banging her on the noggin!

I was surprised to find that the two storage compartments on the floor in
the back seat area are so small. It would have been nice if they were much
bigger so that tools could be stowed away there. I am looking at having to
store my tool box in the truck bed once my Snug top shell is installed (also
ordered the Bed Rug).

I welcome any storage ideas/suggestions, cargo nets, gates, etc.
