You can "preference" the vehicle you want before it hits the ground in
Houston, usually by putting down a check for $500. This way you can keep
Gulf States hands off of it. I also didn’t want to pay top dollar for a
bunch of plastic pin stripes and crap like that. You should see what
they do to every 4WD Tundra, they load it down with every piece of junk
imaginable. Also a good reputable dealer will give you your check back
if you decide not to get the vehicle. The dealers can see whats coming
down the pike before it gets to Gulf States, but, you must make it clear
that you don’t want it filled with "Distibutor Installed Options".

The dealers in that region are also held hostage to this "gulf states"
stuff, its all added at the port of entry and the dealers have no
choice, the "second sticker" in our regions are added on in addition to
the first, in gulf states, the second sticker is part of the first, and
its all aftermarket garbage, now its unique stuff made specifically for
the Toyota to look factory, but if you’ve ever seen one of those
"securi-key" alarms or its installation, it just as well have been an
aftermerket system with a teenager installing it. Can you drive out of
the region and get one from the Los Angeles region?  or north to the
midwest region?

  Get several major out-of-town newspapers at a newsstand or the
library, and call the dealers.  Get on the Net and start searching for
dealers that buy directly from Toyota Motor Sales USA.  And research
your local DMV rules for any weird laws or paperwork roadblocks they
might try to throw up.

  You can do all the details of the deal by phone and fax, and many
dealers will pick you up at the airport and drive you to the
dealership to sign the papers and pick up your car.  Some will even
buy you the one-way plane ticket.  And do it on a friday, so you have
the weekend for a leisurely drive home – remember to take it easy, as
you’re still in the break-in period.

 It’s worth the hassle to buy from a dealer at the other end of your
state like I did, or out of state, if you /know/ you’re going to get
hosed by the local dealers or the regional distributor.
