I have been cursed by a maddening metallic squeal from under the
truck. (99 Taco 2WD – 3.4) Here are the symptoms:
1. Randomly occurs, happens when cold or warm
2. Noise does not change when brakes are applied or the truck is put
into nuetral
3. The noise gets louder when the throttle is released, quieter when
throttle is applied
I had one Toyota tech email me and say he replaced the muffler on
several Tacos with same problem and it fixed it, however the noise
definitely sounds like it is drive shaft related. You can tell the
noise is from something spinning. I am thinking that it changes with
throttle because the additional torque shifts whatever is making the
noise.
I noticed various grease fittings on the drive shaft, are these
supposed to be regreased on a regular basis? I am at the end of my
rope. I took it to the dealer once and they said they couldn’t
reproduce the noise. I am at 35k miles so I want to get this nailed
down before the bumper to bumper expires.
I have received 3 or 4 emails from other 99-2K Taco owners complaining
of the same noise so I know it isn’t just me. Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I did replace a driveshaft on a 97 Tacoma for this exact same reason. I
was unable to physically find a problem, ie feel and visual, a tear down
of the joints and carrier bearing would of probably revealed something,
but it was a warranty item and I just replaced the entire shaft.

Ok well I guess the trick is to convince the dealership to do the
same. Any advice on how to accomplish that?

Is it 4WD, I suspect it is, you mentioned grease fittings is why. Remove
the rear shaft, shift it to 4hi and drive it, is the noise gone?

Since its 2WD, you won’t be able to isolate the problem by pulling the
driveshaft. What sort of shaft is this, one piece with 2 u-joints, or a
two piece with center bearing? Noise increasing with decelerating may
point to the rear pinion angle being a little bit too low, then under
deceleration, the pinion tips a bit lower and the shaft starts to
vibrate. Could also be a loose pinion flange nut (check for play there
and tighten if needed), or a worn slip yoke (try taking it apart and
painting the splines with grease and put it back together) – if the
noise improves, then the splines may be worn, same on the u-joints.
Could also be worn (or loose) motor or tranny mounts.
Nope 2WD.

Well since it is under warranty (35k miles) I’d rather have the
dealership fix (or replace) it under the warranty. The drive shaft
appears to be a 2 piece with center bearing.
Could be a long shot but you might want to check for a rock stuck in
the brake calipers. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a
tiny little rock caught between the caliper and the disk. I don’t
remember exactly where it was stuck. It sounded really serious
though, and came on even without braking as the rock was not embedded
in the pad. It came and went randomly.
I hope it’s something so simple.
good luck
