Carburretor not idling back on an FJ40

I have a 1984 FJ40 Landcruiser.  6 cylinder petrol.

It already had the stock exhaust manifold replaced with extractors when I
bought it.  They rusted out and I replaced them with a different brand.

Since then the motor takes some time to settle back to idle when driving and
slowing to a stop.
It seems to me that the vacuum secondry throat of the carburretor is taking
its time to close.  But I am not sure.

For instance as you slow for a red light you lift your foot but the vehicle
does not slow much.  You have to use more than the usual brake as there is
little engine braking.  Then when you come to a stop the motor continues to
rev for a few seconds.

Has anyone else had this problem and can guide me in the right direction ?

Thanks,
Baz

Auto transmission fluid change – Highlander V6

I have a 2002 Highlander 3.0 liter V6 with 30,000 miles of pure highway
driving.  I want to change the automatic transmission fluid but not sure
on this subject.

Do I just drop the pan and drain fluid and replace with appropriate auto
transmission fluid through the dip stick?
Do I need to change any filters?
Do I need to replace gasket?

Thanks,
Nick

1999 4Runner Radio Question

I just bought a used 1999 4Runner Limited, with no radio.  I know
nothing about 4Runners, so I have some pretty basic questions that I
hope someone out there can answer…

First, how do I know which original equipment (not after-market)
stereo to put in it?  It has the double-high opening.  There is one
co-axial type cable that looks like a standard antenna cable.  Then
there’s a second, smaller one.  (What is that smaller antenna cable
for?)  Finally, there’s a white, rectangular block plug that appears
to have all the wires for power, speakers, etc.  The truck has six
speakers.

Below the radio opening, deep in the dash innard, there’s a silverish
metal box with cooling fins on it that looks like it could be an amp.

I called a dozen junkyards, none of which were any help.  I called a
Toyota dealer and they quickly redirected me to a junkyard, so I
didn’t get any useful info out of them.

On eBay, I’ve seen some double-high stereo/CD/cassette units that look
promising (e.g., P/N 56808), but they have two block plug recepticals
on the back and I only have one block plug (that I know of) in my
truck.  Is it the case that you use only one of those recepticals for
a given installation?

Any help in identifying the proper unit for my 1999 4Runner would be
greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

1999 4Runner Basic Questions

I just bought a used 1999 4Runner Limited.  It seems to be missing a
couple of items and I am hoping that someone can clue me in to what
those items were…

First, under the passenger-side rear seat, there are some mounting
flanges and a rubber ring with a metal latch on it.  The rubber ring
looks like it would normally secure something to the mounting flanges.
What would normally be stowed under this seat?

Second, in the passenger-side rear cargo wall, there’s a panel that
comes off.  There are two vertical straps that appear to be designed
to secure a tool box or something flat and rectangular.  What was
originally there?

You can probably tell that I am also missing the owner’s manual! :^)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Runs hot..

I have a 98 4.3 V6 4×4.. It runs just fine and the temp gage always stays a
little under midpoint when I’m driving. The other day I was sitting in the
parking lot waiting for my wife to finish shopping and noticed the temp gage
was almost to the red zone.  I quickly turned off the truck and waited for
her return, as soon as I started the truck it cooled back down to it’s
normal temp. After it cooled down, I check the fluid level and it was full
to the top.  Today I stopped on the way home from work at a Mc Donald’s
drive through and then parked to eat my burger. Again the temp started to
rise. I let it go and it just about got into the red zone. I finished eating
and got back on the road and the temp immediately went back to the normal
range.  When I got home I tried to spin the fan blade and it did have some
resistance to movement. So it must be working somewhat.

-  I sort of ruled out the thermostat as it keeps the temp at the normal
level most of the time.
– The radiator isn’t leaking and must be doing it’s job. But maybe not good
enough?
– I have no idea how much restiance the fan should have when hot. Is there a
measurement I could make to test that, or should it be locked tight when
hot?

Anyone have any suggestions, other then not eating fast food.. LOL

New car buying strategies

All–
Read on Edmunds that it is better to locate the dealer w/ your
car’s wish list, and deal w/ him, rather than another dealer who has to
bring it in.  True?  Worth the trouble to run around yourself?

Also, the 2005′s are coming in, looking for leftover 2004.  Now is
certainly a good time to buy, but would Nov/Dec be that much better?  In the
50 mi. radius around me (approx. NYC), there are about 250-300 vehicles
(frontiers/tacomas), about 50-100 of them configured approx. as I would
like.  I’m thinking these dealers are not going to run out of these
tomorrow!  Also *stacked full* of 2004 Sentra’s!
Should I wait?  Haggle hard now?  Kinda want to get it over with, as
well.
Recalling someone’s comment here that they waited a cupla months
before their dealer made sense on a Tacoma.
I know all the invoice stuff, avg price paid, from Edmunds.
But the accessory stuff is sort of a mystery.  I have an idea they
keep it a mystery for the final screwing of the customer.  Keep the
accessories separate?  Do them later, after taking delivery?  Any esp. good
way to handle this??  Do third party wherever poss??
        TIA.

Passenger Widows 2002 Tundra

Both the hinges of the passenger windows of my 2002 Tundra Access Cab broke
where they join the window.  The piece that broke is plastic and attaches to
a rod (the piece the gets pulled down by the cam action of the hinge)
anchored to the window   They both broke within the last 3 weeks (about 500
miles post warranty).  Is this a common failure?  Can I buy 1/2 a hinge?
Thanks,
Trevor
