Q for Rick

Rick,

How’s your ’98 working lately?  Mine’s still doing good.  I tried to
play my case with Toyota about replacing my ’98 TRD flares that were
showing white through them due to flying road debris from my tires,
but they wrote me a nice PFO letter.  Oh well.

I now have a set of 2001 all-plastic set, save for the passenger side
front one.  Toyotaguys.com says they can get me one for 131 USD +
shipping!  For one!

Can your dealer do any better than this, or does it sound about right?
If not, do you have any good leads on Toyota wreckers (besides TAP in
Cali, already checked with them and they have nothing).

Next Q:  Interference engines, the 2.7 and the 3.4…..which one is an
interference engine?  I was under the impression that the 2.7 was an
interference and the 3.4 was not, any input?

Thanks,

-Rob

Rob, there is a factory dealer installed kit for these now, they are
plastic and use existing mounting holes, entire kit is about $130, this
is all 4, they will be black plastic. As for the earlier TRD fiberglass
ones, they are spendy, I replaced all 4 of mine and had them painted to
match, so now it looks like a limited, so I went and added all the
limited badging. :-) Of, there was a TSB for wider mudflaps in front for
the early rigs, about 1" wider, I added these to mine and also added a
piece of clear sticker to the leading edge of the rear bed where rocks
hit, this is a Toyota part and didn’t come factory, but you can buy it
    over the counter.

    Hey Rick,

Ya, I saw the TSB and tried to get Toyota to give me the update since
my paint was damaged just ahead of my rear flares and the front part
of my rear flares were damaged, but no go.  Toyota Canada said that my
insurance should cover it under "road hazard".  What a joke.

    My situation right now is:

    - I bought a set of four 2001 flares from a guy (plastic, unpainted)
    – One flare (pass, front) has some scratches on it
    – I sanded the scratches out of this flare, but it can’t be used as is
    now
    – I don’t want to paint my flares b/c it won’t look good to me
    – My old ’98 flares have already been sold

In your message, were you saying that the kit of all four 2001 flares
is 130 USD?  Or is this just the price for the "Upgrade kit" for the
the ’98′s?  (i.e. wider front flares and mudgaurds)

Let me know, I don’t want to pay 130 USD for one flare!

    (Also, the interference engine question?)

Rob, the original flares require special square holes in the fender,
there is another bolt on kit that requires no holes, it looks almost
identical to the original flares, thsi kit requires no holes, it uses
the holes in the fender opening lip and its about $130 for the entire
kit, atleast, we have them in the US. Shall I look into a part number
for you?  Oh, this kit will fit ALL 4WD and Prerunner Tacomas too.

OK Rob, I’ll post the part number tomorrow after work. ;-)

    Thanks Rick….

Be sure to indicate whether this is for a 2001 fender flare kit or the
    "98 Update" kit.

I’m still trying to find the one, passenger side front fender flare.
    No luck yet.

OK, basically, this kit will be for all that had no flares or those who
did have flares that didnt use the holes in the fenders, basically, this
means it will work on all except those that came with the plastic flares
    already. :-)

    So,

In other words, it’s of no use to me.

If you ever have a friend or see a guy that has a 2001-2002 Tacoma and
is thinking about painting his flares, tell them you know a guy who
has a pass. side front one ready to go in exchange for an unpainted
    one (+ cash from me).

Rick, just wanted to make sure this is not a typo: 4 Black Plastic
Fenders, from the dealer, for only $130? I want some!

    Thanks,

It wasnt a typo, but an incorrect answer. :-( The kit in question is
$350 and is for trucks and it comes from TRD, Toyota themselves do have
an entire fender flare kit for your 4Runner if your interested. Its the
factory kit you see on some now with the flaps extension etc, looks real
    nice.
