Hi folks,
I’m the proud owner of a 2000 Tundra. Quite a step up from the 89 Ford
Ranger I drove for the last 11 years! The "owners manual" was in the
glove box when I bought it but is not "complete" enough for me. Was
wondering if the Toyota Service Manual was better than a Chilton’s.
Thanks for your input.
Regards,
Don

I am sure they are well worth the money. I bought one for my 83 Toyota 4×4
about two years ago and paid about $70 or so from Toyota Publications. Well
worth the money, pictures, easy directions, etc. My wife drives a 96 Chevy
Lumina and I picked up a set of 2 books from EBAY. I was disappointed quite
a bit in GM’s FSM’s, which I personally thought had poor drawings, diagrams,
etc. I would check EBAY first for a factory manual, you might luck out.
After buying mine from Toyota directly, I saw the same exact used one on
EBAY for $15. That’s my 2 cents worth! Good luck.

Generally the Factory Service Manuals are excellent references. I have
one for my ’85 4Runner and it is invaluable. I also have a Haynes
manual and I find they complement each other in some areas. The only
"problem" with the Toyota book is it seems to show a Special Service
Tool (SST) used for every repair task, while the other books are usually
pretty good about telling you when "normal" tools will work and when you
absolutely need the special tool for a given task.
Vastly so — but then the Chiltons is $11.95 and the factory one (2-3 books
usually) more like $110!

ANd the Chiltons will cover look like this on the cover:
Covers all trucks and 4runners, from 1984-1999, 4 cylinder and V6 and be
about 1" thick, the factory manual will be one model, for one year and
on the newer rigs, be 2 or even 3 volumes and a total of about 4" thick,
so you know your missing a lot, but they do cost, especially if you get
a late model one, they are huge! If your a tinkerer,
Chiltons/Haynes/Clymer will work find, but if you really want to do
everything on your rig, factory is the only way to go, even an amatuer
can overhaul his auto or manual transmission with a factory manual!

Thank you all for the advice. I’ll look into the Ebay idea for the
factory book. This seems like a great group. I’ll checking in from time
