Smog problems / mixture

Hi,

I have a 84 22R engine.  The mixture screw is absent.  Is it bolted in or
something, not to be tampered with?

My Truck failed smog.  What are the best preparations to do before a smog if
any.

Pl. Uto.

The mixture screw is hidden under a plug, you must drill out the plug to
    gain access to the screw…

In my experience,  make sure your timing is correct along with changing the
oil, use the best gas you can find, and change every thing you would for a
tune up.  I’m having the same problem passing the test with my ’86,
everything is new, the engine was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago, however the carb
is original ( never opened or adjusted), it has 207,500 miles on it

Have been told adding several bottles of Gasoline Anti-Freeze
to an almost empty tank will improve chances of passing SMOG.
    Does this work?

    Thanks for your input!

I was wondering, I have been using a K&N Air Filter and I know that lets
through more stuff than normal filters but
it gets (they say) burned up and out the exhaust it eventually goes. Could
this possibly skew the readings/make car not pass smog.?  I doubt it, but
    just a thought.
Anyway, I am going to try again tomorrow, new air filter, driven truck 1/1/2
tank full w/the gasoline additive I got at Kragens that gurantess
to clean out excess hydrocarbons etc.  Plus a new oil change.  Crossing my
    fingers.

I had the same problem with my ’86 pickup in Colorado, besides needing a HAC
Valve(high altitude comp. valve) I also needed a new cat. converter mine was
fried, but also my carb. was going the combination of these things all made
mine fail, you should check out these problems esp. if your at ahigh altitude,
but a bad cat. onv. will make you fail and so will a bad carb.  If your failing
by a lot it’s prob. the carb.

You have a mixture screw, its just behind a brass plug about the size of
a pencil eraser. Its on the RH side of the car. What were your smog
readings??? HC and CO and rpm’s
