Smoother Ride for a 89-94 Toyota PU

Hi guys,

Was just wondering what setup would give a 89-94 Toyota a very smooth
ride just for the STREETS. I dont do any off roading and would like to
mod my truck to get a much smoother ride. So far I have taken out the
overload leaf spring on the rear and that has helped a bit for the
back. Any suggestions? BTW what did Toyota use for shocks in 89-94,
what Brand and model?..I never carry a heavy load in the bed so I wont
have to worry about that I know…Someone mentioned tires…Well I
runn 195/75 r14 tires right now…How do I know if these are truck or
car version? As for shocks, for a smoother ride, would I want a shock
that is easier to push down on it or pull out the piston fast? I
always get these two mixed up when I am inspecting the shocks off the
vehicle…

You are probably out of luck hoping it will ride smooth —
it is designed to carry weight and with the bed empty is
rough riding.  Add 200+ lb worth of bagged sand or gravel to
back of bed and ride will be improved.  Consumer Reports has
always panned Toy PU for their harsh ride — of course
their baseline is a car!  If you tires have 2 ply sidewalls
then they are probably car vice truck tires (4 ply or
reinforced side walls).  Stock shocks are Tokico — try
Monroe shocks and avoid Gabriell (stiff like a piece of
pipe).  Rancho (made by Monroe/Teneco) 9000′s are adjustable
so that might be worth a try.

    I have an 89 SR5-V6-XTraCab 2WD.
The stock torsion bars are actually too soft for a smooth ride
unless you only drive on smooth roads.  The soft springs
are easy to bottom out.  I went to Steve Stilllen torsion bars with
20% increase in spring rate and have found that Tokico
Trek Master shocks give about the smoothest and controlled
    ride.

To get a compliant ride you need fast compression damping
(relatively easy to push down the shock), but slower rebound
(more firm when you try to pull the shock apart)

get some adjustable shocks like the Rancho 9000′s.  The adjustability
feature really allows you to dial in the ride you want.  We have them on a
couple of our Toy pickups and highly recommend them for this feature.  We
leave them set on 3.  If we are going to haul a heavy load, then up to 5.
We didn’t get the in-cab control unit cause we don’t change settings very
often, so we just get under the truck and do it.

    opinions will vary,  jk
