Storage in bed of Tacoma

I’ve got a 1 week old Tacoma, I’m in the midst of figuring out how to store
the not overly large amount of crap I used to keep in the trunk of my
Taurus. Caps are out of the question – I just don’t like them. I’m
considering metal boxes, like this:

….or hard tonneau covers. I’m interested in any comments based on direct
experience (good or bad) with specific brands of hard covers. Wondering
about watertightness, rattling, and how much certain ones might mar the
finish via their attachment methods.

My main storage concerns are things like the washbasin full of car fluids
that are always with me, the bundle of fishing rags, poles, tackle boxes,
and the times I need to ditch a briefcase w/laptop when I run into the
supermarket on the way home from work.

Look at the design for water-tight construction.  And wherever they
touch the bed they can rub and damage the paint, you need to place
rubber padding and clamp securely so they can’t wiggle around.

Bed boxes are fine for most uses, and are as secure as the latching
and locking mechanisms – if the latches are strong and the locks
armored, nobody is getting in without heavy weaponry.

If you’re going to store both a large assortment of fluids and
supplies, and fragile stuff like a laptop computer, fishing tackle,
etc., you should get multiple boxes (both side bed bins and a
cross-bed box) so you can segregate the breakables from things that
would do the breaking, the heavy and fluid items.

Hard tonneau covers give the largest space, like a really huge
trunk, but they’re a pain if you want to carry large items – you have
to have them hanging out the back or take off the cover.
