Today out of the blue my 4Runner decided it didn’t want to start (71000
miles). I got in, turned the key and just heard a click. The lights came on,
the doors locked automatically, but the engine wouldn’t turn over. I tried a
couple times and it did the same thing. Then I took the key out and started
to get out and decided to try one more time and it started right up like
normal. It started fine the rest of the day (about 10 times) until the
evening after it sat for about 4 hours. It did the same thing twice, then
started up like normal. I thought maybe it was the battery going so I bought
and installed a new one, but it did it again afterward. Just wondering if
anyone has heard of something like this and what the potential problem could
be. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello,
You are probably experiencing a common Toyota starter problem, but one
that is easily fixed. It is probably the contacts in the starter solenoid.
There is even a web site showing the repair (I don’t remember the web
address—help!! someone out there knows it!!), it is easy and cheap to
repair. Basically, take off the starter, take the front off the solenoid on
top of the starter motor, buy new contacts at the parts store, install, and
put starter back on. Hope this helps, jnkessler
