I looked up the Toyota TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on my truck (Tacoma
Prerunner V6 Auto SR5 TRD) and was wondering what a TSB was. Is it a
warranty thing? I noticed a couple for my truck. The numbers are:
PG014-01, ST003-01, AX004-01, PG003R-01, PG009-02, PG008-02, EG007-02,
EG003R-02, TC001-02. The ones I’m really worried about are the fan coupling
(AX004-01), steering wheel off center (ST003-01), vin plate (PG009-02) and
valve cover oil baffle (EG007-02). Are these things fixed for free? I know
my truck technically can only tow 3800 ibs because of the fan clutch. Would
they replace it to the 5000 ibs rated one for free? Thanks.

a technical service bulletin is a publication thats distributed by the
manufacturer to dealer technicians. they explain how to fix problems that
are common to any particular make/model.

TSB’s are service tips for specific problems if they occur with your
vehicle. In other words if the problems not there, then there is no need to
fix it. Also they always don’t apply to just your vehicle. The steering
wheel off center one for example applies to all models, and is just some new
BS method Toyota developed to stop us from charging them for an alignment
when we found a new car with the steering wheel off center on the PDI. I
would guess the PGXXX-01 TSBs are for things like attatching the front
license plate. And the VIN plate one is just how to order one if the body
panel it’s attatched to needs to be replaced. Again, nothing that needs to
be done unless you happen to have that specific problem.
Chris
What about the fan coupling? Would they replace that? I want to be able to
tow 5000lbs. Also, I live in Las Vegas and I offroad so having a better fan
coupling would keep my engine cooler. Is that something that could be
replaced under warranty since my truck can’t tow 5000lbs (according to
Toyota)? If not, do you know how much it would be?

Why not contact your local dealer and ask them? I just replaced the fan clutch (coupling) on my ’85 4Runner and it cost me
under $75 for the new part. I imagine the new coupling uses a thicker silicone oil. If so, you can replace the oil for less
cost than a new clutch.

Well is there anything wrong with the original? I mean is it working like it
is supposes to. If so, then no I don’t think they will or should replace it.
I can’t imagine the only difference in your trucks towing ability being the
fan clutch.

You’re going to need more than a fan coupling to safely tow 5000lbs
with your Tacoma. I had a V6 Pre-Runner, and anything over 3500 or so
got a little scary unless you were going very slowly.

Well, by changing the fan clutch, you can go from 3500 to 5000. The
older rigs all had the nice green clutch fans already.

Is there a place on the web that shows the TSB’s for a Tacoma ?
I also wanted to ask how long should I turn off the power to allow the
computer to reset ?

I would NOT go over the factory weight limit by very much without
working ELECTRIC trailer brakes (since AFAIK they haven’t got a
fishtail ‘panic button’ for surge brake controllers yet) and a weight
equalizing hitch (with the torsion bars), and a trans cooler on
automatics.
And going Very Slow and Easy. That means 45 MPH /MAX/ on the flat
and level – at least until you’re very certain you won’t have handling
problems going 55…
With a pickup, you’ll want some weight in the bed to keep the rear
axle down and avoid a fishtail situation.
When towing with any car or light truck, whenever the trailer
outweighs the tow vehicle, you have a potential handling problem.
That’s one of the many reasons why they don’t let amateurs drive
Semi’s. ;-)

Yes there is something wrong with the original. It is not rated to cool the
engine enough for a 5000 lbs tow.

Why did they all of a sudden put the orange fan clutches on the ’01′s and
up? Why didn’t they stick w/ the green ones? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to put
all the same clutches on all the vehicles than make 2 different ones?

Good question! I have asked myself that many times. Why does cars headed
for California have smaller washer bottles? Sure, they may not use as
much water, but isnt it cheaper just tooling up and making one part to
cover them all? I’m sure it boils down to $$$
