Hello All,
I want to ask everyones opinion on winter tires
for a 2000 4Runner.I’ve been looking around lately and everywhere I
go, I am told to buy
eitehr Michelin’s 4X4 Alpine or Bridgestone Duler DM-Z2 tires.
the problem is I don’t want a tire made from super soft compound,
a-la Blizzak.
I was looking at the Michelin LTX/AT or BF Goodrich AT/KO but
every store I’ve been to tell me thise will not be good for our
winters.
(Montreal Canada) where it gets to -20 or -20 C on a regular basis.
I assume they say this because of the harder
compound, but there’s gotta be other choices besides tires with
rubber that feels like bubble gum ?!?
Looking at this stuff up on the web is more confusing than anything
else.
Mud and now ? All Terrain ? All Season ?
You don’t find many 4X4 tires designated as "Winter".
and when you do, it’s this super soft compound models.
We get alot of snow here, but most of the time it’s slushy/hard packed
snow or ice. No off-roading will be done.
Isn’t there a tire that is good in snow and slush (decent on ice)
but with agressive treads instead of those Blizzak type deals ?
I am being told that the tires rated as "AT" or not going to be any good in
slushy/hard packed street snow.
What are my choices ?
thanks
Mike

Nokian makes what are probably the world’s best winter tires
http://www.nokiantires.com/indexen.html . They have a lot of dealers in
Quebec.
Mike,
Nice to see another fella from Quebec on the list. I’m living in
Quebec City.
Whoever told you the BFG A/T’s weren’t any good for our conditions was
full of it. They’re great winter tires, they simpliy eat up snowy and
icy conditions. I often drive from Quebec City to my home in Labrador
a couple of times a winter and that road from Baie-Comeau to Fermont
is not a pretty one. Often lots of snow and certainly lots of ice.
My BFG A/T’s eat that road like the 20 Autoroute when mounted onmy ’98
Tacoma.
They’re a tad expensive at times, but they’re great rubber. I will be
buying another set when my current ones wear out.
The other tires you mentioned were good as well, but from my personal
experience, I like the BFG’s.
Regards,
-Rob Pilgrim

mostly depends onb the terrain you plan on driving on… "Winter" means nothing
but winter usually brings snow and ice. So if you plan on driving on snow and
ice alot, then that is the real question…
